Faith in Action Volunteer

Program: Faith in Action
Description:
Faith in Action provides several volunteer opportunities.  Below is a list of different ways you can help a senior in your community to remain living independently.
  • Minor Home Repairs- Complete minor indoor/outdoor home repairs for seniors.  Volunteers are not expected to do any repairs that would normally require a contractor.  The volunteer may need to provide the necessary tools/equipment if the care receiver does not have them.
  • Short-Term Respite Care- Provide short-term respite care through friendly visits for family members caring for their frail loved ones.  The purpose is to give the family member a break so they may run errands, go grocery shopping, or relax.  May be matched with someone who has Alzheimer's, dementia, or is in the final stages of life.
  • Driver- Offer transportation for seniors or disabled to meet their routine doctor appointments, cancer treatment, or dialysis appointments.
  • Light House Keeping-  Assist with light housekeeping tasks such as: vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, and taking out the garbage.  Tasks to be performed are determined by volunteer and care receiver in advance.
  • Friendly Visits/Calls- Bring compassionate care through friendly visits and/or telephone calls to homebound elderly.  Or be a listening ear and support person for someone going through cancer treatment.
  • Yard Work-   Assist elderly with outdoor work such as spring clean up, raking during the fall, and shoveling in the winter.
  • Shopper-   Assist an elderly neighbor with errands such as grocery shopping and prescription pick-up.  May accompany the care receiver on the errand or do the errand for them.

An initial training session is conducted for all volunteers in the Faith in Action program.  Continued support is offered through the staff in the office.
